The Venice of the Mind
Hand printed in archival ink on fine art paper, this is a cloth bound book in a limited edition of 14 copies.
Every page has pop-ups, flaps, and other surprises.
A metal laser cut map of the city, showing its resemblance to a fish, is embedded in the cover.
As well as a dream world of fantasy, the book also explores the history of a very real city in an afterward which illuminates the references to Venice’s past through the book’s story.
It comes with a steel book stand which permits display of the 3 dimensional pages on a shelf.

All of my work explores the ways in which our own personal narratives shape the world we inhabit.
Venice might be the paradigm of this idea – it is an invented geography, an ‘improbable city’ built up from a collection of islands by refugees seeking safety.
It exists as vividly in our imagination as it does in reality.

The included metal stand allows for the display of the sculptural pages

“I came to a bridge with bright colourful decorations. Crossing it felt like some kind of kaleidoscope.”

“What a strange city this was, with water in the place of roads and none of the usual sounds of traffic.”

“la porta terrestre dà accesso a una porzione di mondo limitata…
mentre la porta sull’acqua dà direttamente su una dimensione senza confini.”

“the door onto land gives access to a limited portion of the world, a small island, while the door on the water opens directly onto a borderless dimension”
Italo Calvino
